Term 1 Reflection
What a whirlwind term! We have had cyclones, heat waves, torrential rains and beautiful days in between; we have had fencing and workers on site to update our infrastructure; we have had our swimming carnival, the last-minute cancellation of our Cross Country (which Parnka were in the box seat to win); PBL reward days, lunch time activities, a student leadership breakfast and so many more things happening at Gladstone State High School this term.
Even with all of this going on, our teaching team maintained a clear focus on learning in classrooms and other teaching spaces. This team continues to make our students the centre of their work, with a focus this year on how we effectively deliver learning, the pedagogy; essentially what approaches we take to ensure that teachers deliver learning in the best possible way for our students in both theory and practice.
Again, this term, the vast majority of our students made great decisions each and every day in our school. They were respectful in their interactions with their peers and our staff, and they filled our school with success, joy and fun. Our vision of “Every Student Succeeding” is about success in life, with the academic journey being one important part, with cultural and arts pursuits, sporting endeavours and service opportunities all combining to help develop a well-rounded global citizen ready to make their mark.
As a school we recognise that students will engage in different ways and that their needs will all be unique. I could not be prouder of our staff for the way they provide so many different approaches in their classes, but equally for the opportunities provided to our students outside our classes:
- Substantial number of students representing Port Curtis and Capricornia across a range of sports (over 150 students)
- Students accessing so many opportunities within this first term including the Instrumental Music Twilight Concert, Swimming Carnival, a vast array of representative sporting opportunities, student leadership sessions, daily lunch time activities, PBL Rewards days, House Spirit parades and the Valentine’s Day fundraiser to name a few
ANZAC Day reminder
ANZAC Day is always a special day on our school calendar. The opportunity for our school, both students and staff, to recognise our armed forces and pay their respects to those that have proudly worn our flag into battle is truly a privilege. This year will be no different. We will run two school services on Thursday April 24, one for the Junior School and one for the Senior School. Unfortunately, our hall does not hold enough chairs to have all students seated together.
On Friday, April 25, students and staff of Gladstone State High School will proudly attend the Dawn Service as well as the Community March/Parade. We invite all students, parents and staff to join us as we pay our respects at these important events.
Winter uniform
As the cooler months start to arrive, it is time to remind our students and community of our uniform expectations. Your student’s planner clearly outlines the expectations including clothing items that are not accepted. Just a reminder that our school jumpers, jackets and trackpants (with the school logo) are the only approved winter attire. Jeans and hoodies are not permitted and are not an acceptable alternative at Gladstone High.
Rest, Relax and Recharge
Term 2 starts on Tuesday April 22. Over the break ahead, we encourage our students and staff to take the opportunity to rest, relax and recharge. This will look different for each of our school community members, with the goal that we each return ready for a great Term 2. For those travelling over the break, we ask that you stay safe on our roads. We want everyone back safe and well.
Report Cards
Report cards will be issued at the end of the first week of Term 2. Our teachers are currently working through the process of marking and reporting. As report cards are emailed out, please make sure that you have updated your email address if it has changed recently. Our focus will be on Effort, Behaviour and Achievement; there will be no comments for this reporting period.
Infrastructure Update
The new ID&T building (manual arts) will be handed over this week. It is truly impressive! Our staff will be in the new building week 1 next term, with theory to start in the classrooms in week 1 and workshops in week 2.

Now that we are occupying the new building, demolition of the existing ID&T facilties will start over this coming holiday period. Once fully removed, the focus will then be on creating a ‘green space’ in the area. This space will provide additional seating, shade and some much needed grass and colour for our students to enjoy.

YEAR 8 & 9 ENGLISH NEWS
This term, Year 8 and Year 9 have been exploring narratives – Children’s Stories and Speculative Fiction. Both of these assessments required a ‘multi-modal element’ and below are some examples of how students interpreted this prompt. It was a great opportunity for students to create an original text in a style that suited them!

BOOK CLUB NEWS

Book Club Newsletter – Term 1
As Term 1 comes to an end, we are already looking forward to another exciting term of Book Club!
🔹 Readers Cup Update
Some of our members have started their journey in the Readers Cup, and we cannot wait to see how they go! Best of luck to everyone involved.
🔹 Book Club Records
Our Book Club founder has once again set an incredible reading record—finishing 30 books this term! That’s an impressive three books per week! Collectively, our club has read another 15 books. Well done, everyone!
🔹 Year 12 Reading Corner
Our Year 12 members tackled The Crucible by Arthur Miller this term. While they found it an interesting play, they are relieved to be done with the analysis! For those curious about the story but not keen on reading the play, there is a film adaptation available.
🔹 Easter Holiday Reads
The Easter break is the perfect time to catch up on your To Be Read list! If you’re looking for a new book, Sunrise on the Reaping has just been released. This prequel to The Hunger Games explores the life of Haymitch Abernathy and fills in many gaps in his story. It’s a fantastic read—and also looks great on the bookshelf!
Remember, there are two types of book lovers:
Those who read books
Those who collect books
… and it’s totally fine to be both!

Happy reading, and see you next term!
ADF CAREERS TALK
ADF Careers Talk Inspires Senior Students
On Wednesday, 2nd April, our Senior School students had the valuable opportunity to attend an Australian Defence Force (ADF) careers talk, presented by George Stack and Bryan Hudson from the Royal Australian Air Force.
This session provided students with an in-depth understanding of the diverse career pathways available within the ADF, ranging from technical and engineering roles to healthcare, aviation, and leadership positions. George and Bryan outlined the rigorous yet rewarding application process, highlighting the skills, qualifications, and personal attributes required to succeed in a military career.
The talk not only broadened students’ perspectives on future career options but also underscored the values of discipline, teamwork, and service that define ADF roles.
A sincere thank you to George Stack and Bryan Hudson for generously sharing their time and expertise with our students.

2025 Next Step Year 12 Completers Survey
All Year 12 completers from last year will soon receive an invitation to participate in the Next Step survey. This is their chance to help our school to understand the different pathways of the 2024 Year 12 students and to improve our senior programs and supports for future students. The survey only takes five minutes and asks graduates about their study and work activities since finishing school.
As a thank you for participating, Year 12 completers who complete the survey will be entered into a draw to win a MacBook Air.
We ask parents, siblings and friends to encourage our graduates to complete the survey. If their contact details have changed, please assist survey interviewers by providing their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate. Graduates may receive an invitation by mail, email or phone. The survey can be completed online or by phone.

GUIDANCE OFFICER NEWS
Guidance Officer Mrs Harvey recently attended James Cook University, Townsville as part of their TeacherX Program to represent Gladstone SHS. This was an opportunity to tour the campus and bring back the latest information on programs and courses that the university has on offer. It was an information packed 2 days with lots of opportunities for hands on experiences. JCU boasts excellent ratings in the Good Universities Guide and prides itself on the amount of real-world placement hours it has for its students embedded into their degrees. JCU believe this ensures that their graduates are industry-ready and often gain employment before the completion of study. JCU ensures that regional, rural and remote students make up a high percentage of their student cohorts. It also houses many international students – especially through their Masters and PhD programs. Being close to the ocean, it is no surprise they offer amazing opportunities through their marine science and aquaculture programs. JCU is a university our students should definitely be considering. Senior students are encouraged to monitor student notices for JCU information sessions that Mrs Harvey will run for students early in Term 2.
