PRINCIPAL’S ADDRESS

Focus Area Improvement
As outlined earlier in the year, our two key focus areas for this year involve reflections on our actual teaching approaches (the pedagogy), as well as increased feedback to our teaching team through class observations and class walk throughs.
It has been extremely pleasing to see the work that our teachers are doing in relation to these areas, with discussions, reflections and sharing of teaching practices becoming a key part of our school. Additionally, watching our Heads of Department and Deputy Principals providing feedback to our teachers through observations sets a positive tone throughout Gladstone State High School.
Feedback is a crucial part of any improvement focus and I continue to be impressed with the way our teachers accept this feedback, and in turn, look for ways to improve their teaching approaches.
Midnight – The Cinderella Musical
The curtains at the Gladstone Entertainment and Convention Centre will rise at 7pm tonight, the lights will dim, and the crowd will hush in quiet anticipation of a wonderful evening of theatre! The 2025 Gladstone State High School musical, Midnight – The Cinderella Musical is an event not to be missed. We have our tickets…do you have yours? Limited tickets left for both tonight and tomorrow night. Jump on the GECC website and come along for an evening to remember!
School Captain Interviews
The tradition of excellence in student leadership continues at Gladstone State High School! We recently held interviews for students that have nominated for School Captain positions for 2025/2026. Again, this year, we have some outstanding candidates, passionate about leading Gladstone State High School for the next 12 months. The next phase will include candidate speeches and voting from both students and staff, with the announcement of our successful candidates later in the term. This year’s leaders have set a strong example of student leadership, and we are confident that the incoming captains will continue this tradition.
Y Lead
Our Junior Leaders recently attended a leadership conference in Rockhampton. Y Lead provides opportunities for our students to learn about leadership, understand the impact strong leadership can have, connect, and network with leaders from other schools as well as sharing their leadership experiences with others. Our feedback from the students and staff involved has been incredibly positive. I thank Deputy Principal Stacey Josh for her work in championing Student Leadership at Gladstone State High School.
Recent PBL Event
As an integral part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program, recognising and rewarding students for making good decisions in relation to their attendance and behaviour is essential. We recently saw over 100 students attend our Movies Under the Stars night at Gladstone State High, a wonderful roll up! An incredibly pleasing aspect of this night was again, the number of our teachers who attended, showing their support for our students and for the importance of our PBL approach at our school. Over 15 staff gave up their Friday night to supervise and celebrate with our students. We truly have a staff to be proud of.
Athletics Carnival
With athletics carnival looming (Wednesday and Thursday of week 7), our collective fingers are crossed that the forecast of rain is a little off. The preparation has been done, the students are excited, our staff are ready…we just need the weather to be kind. Our Sports Coordinator, Trudy Sheppard, has everything organised, planned and prepared. Again, for the Athletics Carnival, Parnka House is ready to roll – they are definitely the team to beat!

FLEXI SPACE NEWS
This week in Flexi Space Literacy, students were thrust into a high stakes heist to steal the McManion Diamond from the Museum of High Society. This required them to use literacy and teamwork skills to navigate wires, disarm lights and alarms and persuade each other which escape route would be the most effective. Students enjoyed the activity and worked together to accomplish the objective.

YEAR 12 SCIENCE IN PRACTICE NEWS
This year, the Year 12 Science in Practice students have been studying Forensic Science. The unit has included studying the history of forensic science, producing an information video about a true crime and conduct crime scene analysis such as fingerprinting, blood typing, using microscopes to look at hair and fibres, toxicology and soil analysis. Students have been using the skills they have learnt to solve a crime for their end of unit assessment.

INTERACT CLUB NEWS
Interact Club students have been busy again this term. They have raised over $2000 hosting a Bunnings BBQ fundraiser. Thank you to Woolworths for the $100 donation to help with this!
Also, students have volunteered at the Gladstone Park Run and the GPC Family Fun Day, sporting our new Interact Club shirts – looking awesome!
