ANZAC Day Ceremonies
The opportunity to share our school ANZAC Day assemblies with invited guests, Kay Kirkman – Regional Director, Glenn Butcher – State Member for Gladstone, Colin Boyce – Federal Member for Flynn, Simon McClintock – Councillor for Gladstone, Captain (AAC) Tattum – Officer Commanding the 124th Army Cadet Unit, Trevor Davis – returned serviceman and staff member of Gladstone High was truly special. Mrs Kirkman wore her school vice-captain badges from her time as a student at our school.

We see the opportunity to recognise the commitment and sacrifices of the men and women in our armed services and their families, as a privilege at Gladstone State High School, with our students, staff and invited guests continuing this strong tradition this year. Our students were again exceptional, those that watched respectfully and those that took part in the assemblies, our presenters, our strings ensemble and our choir. I would like to single out two of our students for a special mention. Mia Debattista’s rendition of both the Australian and New Zealand national anthems was simply outstanding, as was the bugle playing of Isobelle Duckham. Our invited guests spoke glowingly about the behaviour and respect of our students, the quality of the band and singers, the impressiveness of our student leaders who ran the events, as well as commenting on the quality of the organisation of the events. Wonderful feedback about our students, staff and school.

Increased numbers of students at both the Dawn Service and Community Parade highlighted the continued importance that ANZAC Day has for Gladstone State High School. Our students wore their uniforms with pride, stood resolutely and paid their respects as part of Gladstone State High School. I would like to thank Year 12 Coordinator, Simone Henderson for her organisation of our school

Midnight – The Cinderella Musical
Mark May 30 and 31 onto your calendar, with our school musical ready to hit the stage. Rehearsals underway, set designs coming together, students and staff excited…with a healthy amount of pre-performance nerves!
Report Cards
Report Cards were recently sent out. We encourage our parents to work through the report card with their child, with a particular focus on effort, behaviour and attendance. If these areas are tracking well, generally our students are achieving what they are capable of. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any concerns. We would also encourage our parents to consider booking an appointment to speak to their child’s teachers at the upcoming Parent Teacher Interviews.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Our Parent Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Tuesday May 13, running from 3:30pm until 6:00pm. Information regarding this event, with instructions on how to book an interview, will be emailed home to parents as well as provided later in this newsletter. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss your child’s progress as well as possible strategies to ensure that your child reaches their potential.
Attendance + Effort = Results
Attendance Matters – Everyday Counts
It will come as no surprise to our parents and community that there is a strong relationship between attendance and academic success. The teacher in the classroom continues to be the major influence on student learning. If the student is missing class, then it stands to reason that they are missing out on quality instruction and the opportunity to understand the key information and skills being taught. I again ask for our parents’ support in ensuring that your child makes it to school on every possible occasion. Our teachers are working very hard to develop quality, engaging lessons and we want all of our students to benefit from their knowledge and expertise.
General Reminders
Uniform - As the weather cools down, it is important to refer our students and parents to page 16 of the Student Planner where our uniform expectations are listed. We are a uniform school, and we expect our students to be in full school uniform each and every day…even when it is cold.
Winter is coming…
As the weather is cooling down, a reminder about the school’s uniform policy in relation to warmer clothes.
Jumpers: There are two styles: our school Zip-up Spray Jacket or school V-Neck Pullover. HOODIES ARE NOT AN ACCEPTABLE option and any student wearing a hoodie will be asked to take it to the Wellbeing Hub, where it will remain for the day. A ‘loan’ jumper will be provided in its place.
Our students at the Technical College are permitted to wear a plain black jumper, no hood, no branding.
Long Pants: Plain Navy. Hem sits on shoe but not to drag on the floor.
Track Pants: Plain Navy or Navy with school logo (available from the Uniform Shop).

Engaged, Respectful, Responsible, Safe – these key values underpin the expectations that we have for our students at Gladstone State High School. These are unpacked for our students and community on page 21 of our Student Planner. We encourage our students and parents to review these.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Our PBL focus for weeks 3 and 4: “First time every time – follow teachers’ instructions”

YEAR 7 WELCOME TO TERM 2
Year 7 News – Welcome to Term 2
Welcome to Term 2 of Year 7! Our midterm PBL event will be a Movie Night Event for Year 7 students with 90% or higher attendance. Notes will be provided by Week 4 to eligible students.
A Few Reminders...
Attendance
School absenteeism and truancy can significantly impact students' learning and wellbeing. Research in Queensland shows that higher student attendance is generally associated with higher student achievement. Additionally, attending school every day helps children develop social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork, and resilience. If your child is reluctant to attend school or is missing school without your knowledge, please contact Ms. Hunt (Head of Year 7) via email at jhunt309@eq.edu.au or call GSHS at 4976 6174 for assistance and support.
Winter is on the Way!
With cooler weather approaching, please ensure your child has the appropriate school uniform. The Uniform Shop is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00 am to 9:30 am if you need to purchase winter uniforms. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the winter uniform requirements, do not hesitate to contact Ms. Hunt (Head of Year 7) via email at jhunt309@eq.edu.au or call GSHS at 4976 6174.

Flexi-Program - Numeracy
Year 8 students, participating in the Flexi-Program – Numeracy stream have been exploring and applying mathematical formulas to solve problems involving the radius, diameter, and circumference of circles. To enhance relevance and engagement, students have connected these concepts to real-world contexts, such as using pizza as a practical example.
